Facebook Ads are powerful. There's no doubting that. Any business should have a Facebook Ad strategy in their arsenal - or at the very least, you should be testing to see if they're delivering new business and new clients to you.

But Facebook Ads can be a minefield when it comes to getting things right and there are many, many ways it can turn into both a time and money sink. So here are our ideas and suggestions for creating successful Facebook Ads.

  1. Colour is vital. Contrasting colours in carousel ads is even more important. Bold strong colours will catch the attention of your customers as they scroll through their newsfeed or stories.
  2. The headline at the bottom of the ad is important. This should contain a strong call-to-action (CTA) that links to the ad and supports the button to the right.
  3. Make sure the photo you're using links to the target market you've set the ad up for.
  4. If you're using Facebook Lead Gen ads make it very clear what they'll get in return for their information. Any ambiguity and they'll think twice about filling in the form.
  5. Get emotions: good ads create emotions. You've got copy space and a photo to try and create an emotional response.
  6. A/B test your Facebook Ads buttons. You might find that 'sign up' works better than 'learn more'. A few extra clicks can make all the difference.
  7. 'Show don't tell' is an old adage for people writing fiction. It works the same here. If you can show someone how their solution is going to look to them, then it's going to be more effective than just telling them.
  8. Going to use video? Then keep it below 15-seconds. If you can make it 7-seconds, that's even better.
  9. Then again, f**k it. If you're going to do video, why not try a longer 2-minute video and really, really engage the end user? Those who watch it to the end will have a much better idea about what you can do for them.
  10. Is your product or service going to deliver revenue for your customers? Then show them how much. Bring out the numbers.
  11. Use the words 'create' or 'try' in your call to actions.
  12. Can you link to a charitable endevour? Is your product limited edition? Both ideas work well in Facebook Ads.
  13. Use a customer testimonial quote in your copy. People trust that more than ad copy.
  14. If your brand is comfortable with emojis, then use them. But don't overuse them. You'll just annoy people.
  15. Write the ad in second person view. It should all be about YOU, not you.

None of these should be radically new ideas to you. But they are often overlooked when create the most basic ad communication. Getting just a few of these steps right can radically transform your Facebook campaigns.
