What is Conversion Rate Optimisation?

eCommerce Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) is a technique for increasing the percentage of website traffic that makes a purchase (i.e. a conversion).
While boosting website traffic can generate more sales, it can be easier and more cost effective to focus on turning your current traffic into paying customers.
For example, in order to double revenue, an ecommerce store with 100,000 visitors and a 2% conversion rate can (simplistically) choose to either:
- Increase traffic to 200,000 visitors, or
- Improve conversion rate from 2% to 4%.
To increase traffic you generally have to:
- Produce more content and focus on SEO (which is a long term game), or
- Pay for more traffic, which can be very expensive (but immediate)
While we all like to see more traffic, it's more important that the traffic converts.
Through rigorous experimentation and analysis, you should aim to refine your website and marketing activities to encourage people closer to making a purchase at all steps in the funnel.
